Many feel the automobile is the ultimate sign of freedom. When car affordability increased, ownership meant that one could hit the highways and travel
to many destinations previously beyond reach. This led to money being spent at various related automotive dependent businesses such as
restaurants, motels, service stations, and shopping centers. Everyone involved seemed to benefit and the concept car touched the imagination of
auto designers, manufacturers, and the automotive public. Many features found on concept cars made their way into the design of automobiles for the
common car buyer.
Companies such as Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Acura each sported car models that contributed to the growth of the automobile industry. Alfa Romeo and its associate member
companies encouraged designers to improve the aerodynamics of car bodies. Audi developed the five cylinder engine and car bodies with polished aluminum. Acura could be
considered a late comer but was recognized for turning out products of high quality in luxury and performance.
The idea of concept cars also helped inspire independent designers to modify popular cars thereby producing their own versions of "dream cars." This in turn led to
businesses that provided various add-on modifications using body kits, special grills, and other such personalized interior and exterior features.
